Performance Rev

In Formula One racing, hundredths of a second can make a difference in the outcome of a race, making competitive race car development a process where speed and precision is vital. Essential to a race car's design are both the engine and the "packaging" of the engine, since the chassis and the engine work together to win the race. Using interactive compute technology, teamwork, and superior graphics capabilities, Team Sauber engineers detected ten millimeters of extra space in the rear wheel brake zone. By reducing the space, the car became lighter and its aerodynamics improved considerably. Because the new design was lighter than Formula One specifications, the Team Sauber engineers were able to add weight to other areas that would maximize performance. "We gain performance wherever we can find it," says Leo Ress, chief designer for Team Sauber.
